Ranking and more at stake for Tiger

NORTON, Mass. – Shag Bag’s weekly peek at the numbers game takes an intriguing twist this week as the FedEx Cup playoffs approach the halfway point.

Once again, Phil Mickelson has the opportunity to overtake Tiger Woods atop the World Golf Ranking. If Woods finishes outside the top 9 Lefty will become No. 1 if he finishes in the top 3, while Steve Stricker, who is currently ranked fourth, can move up if he wins.

Maybe more interesting, however, are the scenarios to keep Woods’ playoff hopes alive. A win at TPC Boston could move Woods as high as second on the points list and he will likely need to finish between 52nd and 57th to maintain his position inside the top 70 and advance to the third postseason event next week in Chicago.

The only bright spot for math-challenged Shag Bag is that they are no longer keeping U.S. Ryder Cup points and Corey Pavin said he’s going to make Tuesday’s picks based on what his gut says.
