Ranking events Tiger vs. non-Tiger

With Bubba Watson’s move up the world rankings, the Wells Fargo Championship will be host to five of the top 10 in the world this week.

Watson jumped six spots to No. 10 with his victory Sunday at the Zurich Classic.

The Wells Fargo Championship will feature 23 of the top 50 in the world.

There are Tiger events, and there are non-Tiger events.

In the minds of many, that’s what golf has become for more than a decade.

Because of Woods’ injury, the Wells Fargo will be a non-Tiger event.

So if you throw out the majors and the World Golf Championships, which regular PGA Tour stop has boasted the strongest field so far this year?

Going strictly by the numbers, it’s a non-Tiger event.

It’s the Northern Trust Open.

Ask any tournament director, and he will tell you he wants Woods in his event. Woods continues to 'move the needle' more than any other player. Still, here's a ranking of the four strongest fields among the 'regular' PGA Tour stops, based on the number of top-50 players in the field, so far this year. The top two are non-Tiger events:

                                        Top-10 Players Top-50 Players

Northern Trust                          5                          30

Wells Fargo                              5                          23

Arnold Palmer                          3                          23

Honda Classic                         5                          20
