With her victory Sunday, Spain’s Beatriz Recari moves more prominently onto European Solheim Cup radar.
Hey, the event’s just 339 days away. You can get the hour-and-minute countdown until play begins at Killeen Castle in Ireland on Sept. 23 at www.solheimcup.com.
“I would love to play on the team,” Recari said in a telephone interview Sunday night.
Recari was proud of the fact Sunday’s finish came down to her and France’s Gwladys Nocera, both of whom are LPGA rookies who have won on the Ladies European Tour.
“I think it’s very, very good for European golf,” Recari said.
Winning the CVS/ pharmacy LPGA Challenge might not have gained Recari any ground on the LET Solheim Cup points list, but it catapulted her up in the LET Solheim Cup Rolex world rankings list and has to move her up in the mind of Alison Nicholas as Nicholas looks to make her four captain’s picks next year.
With her victory, Recari moved from 25th to seventh on the LET Solheim Cup world rankings list. The top four European players in the Rolex world rankings who aren’t otherwise qualified earn spots on the team. Recari won the first Solheim Cup qualifying event for the 2011 European team when she won last year’s Finnair Masters.
A change in European Solheim Cup qualifying should help Recari as a European playing the LPGA. The European qualifying system formerly took the top five off the LET points list but now will take only the top four with the captain gaining an extra pick.
