DORAL, Fla. – Even after Thursday’s windswept 72, Tiger Woods, and most of the field, seemed more concerned with the possibility of a redesigned Blue Monster than the status quo.
Thursday’s scoring average at Doral was more than a half stroke over par (72.662), but the Blue Monster has lost some of its fearsomeness in recent years. The last two seasons the layout has played to an under-par average and even the layout’s closing hole doesn’t strike fear the way it once did.
The impending Gil Hanse redesign, however, has some players worried. Hanse plans to start working on the course following the 2013 event.
“I like the routing,” Woods said. “I know we have got, what, probably seven more rounds on it before it’s done? So enjoy it before they redo it again.”
