For long-time Tour official Jon Brendle, however, it’s another chance to remember his friend Payne Stewart who died in a tragic plane crash 10 years ago this month. The 1999 Disney stop was also Stewart’s last Tour event.
Stewart, just four months removed from his second U.S. Open victory, missed the cut with rounds of 71-71.
“It was such a blessing he missed the cut,” said Brendle, who lived next door to Stewart. “He got to spend a lot of extra time with his father and his kids. We were together both nights, just drinking and hanging out.
Brendle said he often thinks of his friend, but more so this week. “I have a million memories from that week.”
