Road Hole bunker to be altered

As if the Road Hole at St. Andrews isn't difficult enough already, it's going to be made more difficult for the 2015 Open Championship, according to Sky Sports.

Under the direction of architect Martin Hawtree, who was commissioned by the St. Andrews Links Trust and the R&A, the bunker will be widened by a half-meter to the right. Also, the green will be re-contoured to funnel more balls toward the bunker.

According to R&A Chief Executive Peter Dawson, the R&A has made improvements to other Open Championship venues over the past 10 years, but the Old Course has been largely untouched other than having some holes lengthened.

'The Championship Committee felt there was an opportunity to stiffen its defences in some places to ensure it remains as challenging as ever to the professionals,' Dawson said.

Work at St. Andrews will be conducted in two phases, with the first making alterations to the second, seventh, 11th and 17th holes.

The second phase will take place in winter 2013/14 with work on the third, fourth, sixth, ninth and 15th.
