Rookies trying to break through

It’s been a decade since a PGA Tour season passed without a rookie winning.

This year’s rookie class has just four events remaining to prevent the first shutout since 1998.

Scott Piercy’s in the best early position to break through at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open. He opened Thursday with a 64 and is tied for sixth. Jeff Klauk opened with a 65 and is tied for eighth.

Marc Leishman, by the way, is frontrunner for Rookie of the Year honors. He’s the only rookie to have made this year’s Tour Championship and is highest on the money list at 44th. Webb Simpson is 71st. The award is decided on a vote by the players.
