SAN DIEGO – The rumors have abounded this week at Torrey Pines.
The new North Course with its heavy rough and narrowed fairways is being groomed to host a U.S. Amateur some suggested. Even Phil Mickelson lamented the added length on the North.
Early Sunday 'Shag Bag' ran down PGA Tour official Mark Russell for some answers. As to the narrowed fairways Russell said they have not been adjusted. The rough, however, is a different story.
'We've had some rain which allows them to grow the rough. In the past it was always spotty over there,' Russell said.
