Safe play right play for Lefty

RSS

“Shag Bag” can’t help but jump to Phil Mickelson’s defense for laying up on the 72nd hole on Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open.

According to Lefty his ball was nestled into rough so deep that he didn’t feel he could reach the final green with his hybrid club and his 3-wood would have flown too far.

“(Laying up) was his best chance of making (eagle),” Lefty’s caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay said on Sunday.

Mackay also dismissed the notion that Mickelson, whose career has been defined by his aggressive style, played the last hole too safe.

“I just know how hard he works at it and how hard he wants it,” Mackay said. “He wants to win tournaments and that’s all he wants to do.”
