Scott on Aussie Slam: 'I want to finish big'

RSS

All eyes are on Adam Scott this week as he attempts to capture the third and final leg of the so-called Scotty Slam.

Only one player, Robert Allenby in 2005, has ever won the Australian hat trick (Australian PGA, Australian Masters and Australian Open, the latter of which gets underway Thursday at Royal Sydney). Scott also finished third in last week’s World Cup, where he began the week with an opening 75.

“It’s something that only one person has ever done in Australia,” Scott told reporters Wednesday, via the Sydney Morning Herald. “It’s not something that happens very often. I’d have to think it’s a pretty great milestone for an Australian golfer to win all three events down here. … I’ll give it my best and hopefully you can ask me Sunday night and I can tell you where I reckon it ranks.

“It’s the last week of the year for me. I want to finish big.”

Scott broke through at the Masters for his first career major title and has since added three worldwide titles to his haul. At No. 2 in the Official World Ranking, and now only 2.31 points behind Tiger Woods, he’s as close as he’s ever been to being the No. 1-ranked player in the world.

“I’m not going to stop dreaming of it just because Tiger Woods holds the No. 1 spot,” Scott said, according to the report. “But we all know how difficult it is to surpass him. Only a few people have done it in the last 15 years, and I’ve got my work cut out for me the whole of next year in trying to do that.”

His quest for the Scotty Slam begins at 7:10 a.m. local time (3:10 p.m. ET Wednesday) alongside Jason Day and Kevin Streelman.
