Seve's son in contention in Barcelona

On the same course where his father made his professional debut in 1974, 21-year-old Javier Ballesteros is in contention at the Peugeot Alps de Barcelona on the Alps Golf Tour.

Ballesteros carded a first round of 5-under 65, including six birdies and a bogey at the Golf Club Sant Cugat. He is tied for fifth and trails Ivo Giner and Walker Cup player Jack Senior by three shots. Playing partner Pablo Larrazabal is tied for third at 6-under par.

In 1974, Seve Ballesteros made his pro debut at the host course in the Spanish Professionals Championship. He finished 20th that week.

'When I registered for the Peugeot Tour at Sant Cugat, I didn't know that my father played his first professional tournament here; now that I know, is double excitement,' said Ballesteros, according to the Alps Golf Tour website.

Still an amateur and studying law in Madrid, Ballesteros is uncertain if he will turn pro after completing school this year.

'My goal for this competition is enjoy it, I don't settle goals when I play a tournament, and mostly being an amateur,' he said. 'What I have to do is enjoy and learn. I have no pressure for being Seve's son at all, I have nothing to demonstrate anybody, just me.'
