Shim stuns Liu to win U.S. Junior title

On the verge of becoming a witness to history, Andy Shim staged an incredible comeback Saturday to stun Jim Liu, 4 and 3, in the scheduled 36-hole final in the U.S. Junior Amateur.

Shim, of Duluth, Ga., trailed 5 up after the 18-hole morning session at The Golf Club of New England in Stratham, N.H. He won the first hole in the afternoon, then Nos. 3, 4 and 5, too. Shim took the lead for good when Liu bogeyed the par-3 eighth, and he eventually won eight holes in a 10-hole span, cruising to the title with a bogeyless performance in the afternoon. It is the 17-year-old’s first national victory, and it set a tournament record for largest comeback.

Meanwhile, it’s a crushing defeat for Liu, the 2010 champion, who was vying to become only the third player to win multiple U.S. Junior titles. Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth, now a sophomore at Texas, are the other two players to accomplish the feat.
