Jiyai Shin isn’t playing the LPGA's Lorena Ochoa Invitational this week, but she doesn’t have to worry about losing her No. 1 spot in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings with No. 3 Cristie Kerr, No. 4 Na Yeon Choi, No. 5 Suzann Pettersen and No. 6 Ai Miyazato off to fast starts Thursday at Guadalajara Country Club.
Shin will remain No. 1 next week no matter who wins this week, according to LPGA projections.
The Rolex Player-of-the-Year standings, however, could have a new leader come Sunday night.
Yani Tseng leads the Rolex Player-of-the-Year point standings with 188 points, but the No. 2 ranked player in the world is vulnerable after shooting a 76 on Thursday. With 30 points going to this week’s winner, Ai Miyazato (174), Choi (170) and Kerr (166) all have a chance to overtake Tseng, depending on how many points Tseng wins. Shin also has 170 points.
