You can already hear the rumbling from golf’s stoic halls of power and Webb Simpson hasn’t even teed off for the final round in New Orleans. If Simpson outduels Bubba Watson & Co. he will be the second player in a month to hoist PGA Tour gold wielding a long putter.
Simpson, a second-year Tour player looking for his first tilt, switched to a belly putter while he was still in college. “I came home from an event and I was putting pretty good but I just wanted to give it a try,” Simpson said last week at the Heritage.
Simpson, who is looking to follow long-putting colleague Brendan Steele (Texas Open) into the winner’s circle, said he never felt self-conscious about using the belly putter, which is gaining traction on Tour with the success of recent converts like Adam Scott. Even if he did there would be no reason to change considering he ranks 32nd on Tour in total putting.
