Sizing up the 17th

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Fifty players have gone through the infamous par-3 17th hole here during Round 1 of The Players, which means it’s as good of a time as any to judge how easy or difficult it’s playing.

The scoring average on the hole is 2.902 and it ranks as the 13th easiest hole on the course right now. There have been 32 pars, 14 birdies, 3 bogeys a double bogey and one dreaded “other.” The double belongs to David Toms, who was the first players of the day to find the drink. The other was a quadruple-bogey 7 that went to Greg Owen, who plunked two balls into the aqua.
