Slocum and the cruel cuts

NORTON, Mass. – Heath Slocum may end up being the poster boy for FedEx Cup playoff volatility.

He jumped from 124th in FedEx Cup points to third by winning The Barclays last week.

He missed the cut Saturday at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Though Slocum won’t fall that much thanks to the 2,500 points he won last weekend, going from winning to missing the cut is as volatile as a week gets.

Here are other notables who won’t play the weekend with their FedEx Cup standing in parenthesis: Ernie Els (11th), Stewart Cink (19th), Ian Poulter (21st) and Fred Couples (67th).

With the FedEx Cup playoff field to be limited to 70 next week for the BMW Championship, eleven players guaranteed they won’t advance by missing Saturday’s cut: Couples, Lee Janzen, Cameron Beckman, Rod Pampling, Kevin Stadler, John Merrick, Ted Purdy, James Nitties, Tim Petrovic, Nick O’Hern and Jeff Klauk.
