Slocum trying not to be reunited with Q-School

RSS

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – What a difference a year – or two – makes.

Twenty-four months ago, Heath Slocum was hoisting the winner’s trophy at the inaugural McGladrey Classic. He begins this week at Sea Island Resort 140th in earnings and in need of a good week if he is going to avoid his first trip to Q-School since 2000.

In fact, it had been so long since Slocum last played the fall classic that he didn’t know what to say when officials asked him to list where he’d like to play second stage if it were necessary.

“I had no idea,” he shrugged.

He does have an idea what he needs to do this week, however. Following his most challenging season on Tour (27 starts, nine missed cuts, no top-10 finishes), Slocum figured his mission this week wasn’t complicated.

“The best players in the world play out here. It’s not easy, but I know what I have to do and I feel fine,” he said.
