ARDMORE, Pa. – Want to get a feel for how Merion Golf Club might play at the U.S. Open in four years?
Check out today’s Walker Cup on the Golf Channel (3:30 p.m., ET).
With the sun finally out and winds blowing across the East Course, the greens are beginning to firm up, allowing play to more resemble what the U.S. Golf Association wants when the U.S. Open is played here. The USGA had the greens mowed Sunday morning to putt 6 to 8 inches faster than Saturday. They’ll be rolling at nearly 14 on the Stimpmeter on most greens. The fifth, 12th and 15th greens were cut slower because of the severe slopes there.
The rough, however, will be even more penal and the fairways more narrow when the U.S. Open is played here. Still, you’ll get a feel Sunday for how tricky these greens can be.
