PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Not to get too sappy about the great meeting of air, sea and land, but we took a stroll about Pebble Beach Golf Links late Monday afternoon just about the time the marine layer broke and was duly impressed.
But don’t take our word for it. “Pictures don’t do it justice,” gushed U.S. Open first-timer Mark Silvers.
Of particular interest was the towering Grand Slam-stand adjacent the famous seventh green. There are 60 steps to the top of the superstructure – about the same amount it takes, by the by, to get from the tee box to the green on the 106-yard hole – but the effort is worth the increased heart rate. From the top one has sweeping views of Stillwater Cove, the sixth green and eighth tee box, to say nothing of the pin-sized seventh green.
And they say TPC Sawgrass has stadium seating.
