Sorenstam weathering storm no plans for comeback

RSS

When Annika Sorenstam stepped away from golf before last season, she avoided using the word retirement.

That left the door open to speculation over a return.

In case you’re wondering, with the LPGA’s 2010 season beginning this week, Sorenstam reports no irresistible urge to return to the game.

She’s focused on raising her 5-month-old daughter, Ava Madelyn, with her husband, Mike McGee, and on growing her Annika brand and businesses.

“Right now, playing is not on my radar,” Sorenstam said. “I’m busy with all the businesses we have going, the foundation, the academy, the golf course design, the wine, fragrance and clothing. It keeps me very, very busy.”

Sorenstam’s step away from the game didn’t come at a great time with the dismal state of the economy, but she has her own philosophy on that.

“The timing was probably not the best,” Sorenstam said. “But it helps us stick to the values and morals and different promises within our brand. These are the times when you weed out businesses that are not solid. I think this is a very good time to build our foundation and be ready when the storm turns. Then I think we will do really well. It’s a matter of sticking it through.

“I compare it to golf. You have a few bad holes, a storm comes and you deal with the elements. The players with the best fundamentals and patience and strategy are the ones who are going to do the best.”
