Spieth benefits from luck of the draw at AT&T

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Although he’s playing just his second season on the PGA Tour, Jordan Spieth knows a good draw when he sees one.

Spieth carded his second-consecutive 67 in brutal conditions Friday at Monterey Peninsula Country Club, considered the easier of the three courses in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am rotation.

“Today was very difficult. We started out in the rain and wind, and we finished in rainier and windier,” said Spieth, who is tied for the lead at 9 under with Jimmy Walker. “I’m very happy to be where I’m at, and, really, in the clubhouse while the weather continues out there. So it was nice to be one of the first (tee) times today.”

Spieth struggled on the weekend in his last start at the Farmers Insurance Open, but said he learned from that experience, and he was able to embrace Friday’s difficult conditions.

“You can turn it one way and get all upset about it, and I definitely do that sometimes,” said Spieth, who will play Pebble Beach Golf Links on Saturday. “(But) to be able to think positively about scenarios, everyone is playing in it and fortunately we’re on Monterey versus Spyglass.”
