Stallings fades late after blistering start at Players

RSS

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Scott Stallings had posted a grand total of six birdies in his last 72 holes, missing the cut in each of his previous two events.

So it came as more than a little bit of a surprise when he opened with five straight red circles to start the opening round of The Players Championship on Thursday.

Starting on the first hole at TPC Sawgrass, he made putts of 35, 2, 19, 17 and 4 feet to get to 5-under through five holes.

He failed to keep it going, though. After closing his front nine with four pars, Stallings carded a triple and a double on the back before closing with his seventh birdie of the day to shoot 1-under 71.
