Stenson cuts hand breaking club in final round

BETHESDA, Md. – Henrik Stenson endured a literal bloody beating in the final round at the U.S. Open Sunday at Congressional Country Club.
He emerged from the scoring area with a makeshift bandage around his right index finger.
After misfiring a 7-iron into trouble at the 15th hole, Stenson was wounded snapping the club’s shaft in exasperation.
“I got a bit of a cut,” Stenson said.
Actually, it was more than that. It was a deep gash.
“I had to do a little repair work,” Stenson said of an emergency bandage job on the course. “I worked it out to finish the round. It cut pretty deep.”
Stenson, hurrying to an airport after closing with a 74, wasn’t sure if he needed stitches leaving the locker room, but he plans to play in the European Tour’s BMW International in Munich this coming week.
With a tie for 23rd, it was a good week for Stenson, who had missed five of his last six cuts in PGA Tour events coming to the U.S. Open. He’s making progress in bouncing back from a rough patch that saw him slip to No. 132 in the world after once climbing as high as No. 4. Still, that Sunday finish frustrated him. He was on the leaderboard on the front nine but bogeyed five of his last 11 holes.
