Stroud waiting on Crane for PGA possibility

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Chris Stroud has been here before. Last year, in fact, when he arrived at Atlanta Athletic Club as the second alternate and waited for the call that never came.

Ditto for Paul Goydos, who was the first alternate at last year’s PGA Championship but never hit a meaningful golf shot. “The number never moved last year,” Stroud said late Tuesday as he practiced on the Ocean Course’s idyllic putting green.

Stroud’s chances are much better for this year’s PGA. He’s the first alternate and is waiting to see how Ben Crane’s back is feeling on Wednesday. Crane, who withdrew from last week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational with an ailing back, is back home in Portland, Ore., and his manager with 4U Management said he will make a decision this morning on whether he will play.
