Suggs among LPGA pioneers honored at Founders Cup

RSS

PHOENIX – Even at 89, LPGA Hall of Famer Louise Suggs has retained her quick wit and, apparently, competitive fire.

When U.S. Solheim Cup captain Meg Mallon pointed out Suggs’presence in the audience at the start of a news conference Wednesday, Suggs quickly answered that she was there to apply for a spot on Mallon’s team.

“Get that one down,” Mallon said. “She’s a captain’s pick.”

Suggs is among the 13 founders who started the LPGA 63 years ago. This week’s RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup was created to honor those founders and other pioneers of the women’s tour. Fellow founders Marilynn Smith and Shirley Spork are also here this week. Marlene Hagge is the only other living founder but was unable to attend. Carol Mann and JoAnne Carner are being honored this week as LPGA pioneers.

The LPGA has set up a stage behind the 18th green for the living founders and pioneers to watch this week.
