Teen, beat: Guan posts 77 in Zurich Round 3

AVONDALE, La. – The kid finally acted his age.

On a day when players tore up TPC Louisiana, Guan Tianlang went backward in a hurry Saturday, carding a 5-over 77 to sit last among the 71 players who made the cut at the Zurich Classic. He is at 2-over 218.

After making the cut in a PGA Tour event for the second time in three weeks, the 14-year-old from China made three birdies, five bogeys and a triple to drop down the leaderboard. His 7 on the sixth hole was the first time in more than six Tour rounds that he recorded a score worse than bogey. He hit 10 fairways, nine greens and took 27 putts.

“I didn’t have a good start, and I tried to start back at the middle and make a couple of birdies, but it was not a very good round,” he said.

Unless tournament officials decide to send out players in threesomes to avoid possible afternoon thunderstorms, Guan will be first out and play alone Sunday.

“I still have some chances,” he said. “I will be doing good tomorrow.”
