The unexplainable ace

The eight holes-in-one recorded at the RBC Canadian Open bring into focus the strange nature of the ace.

How do you explain the fact that an 82-year-old woman named Evelyn Tucci once made two holes-in-one in a single round at Crystal Lakes Country Club in Pompano Beach, Fla., the same number of aces Bobby Jones had his entire life?

Jones, by the way, never had a hole-in-one in competition. Ben Hogan had four holes-in-one in his life but never one in competition.

“A hole-in-one is amazing when you think of the different universes this white mass of molecules has to pass through on its way to the hole,” former PGA Tour eccentric Mac O’Grady once cracked.

Jones put it more simply, saying they were just a matter of luck.
