Thumbs up: Kuchar hitchhikes to Muirfield

GULLANE, Scotland – Some Americans playing the Open Championship choose not to drive in the United Kingdom, some have a friend or family member brave the narrow roads.

On Monday, however, Matt Kuchar took an entirely different approach.

Kuchar, who is staying in a farmhouse near Muirfield for this week’s championship, had requested a car to pick him up early Monday. When the car didn’t arrive at the prearranged time he wandered down to the main road and waited.

According to one source, after an extended wait Kuchar decided to hitchhike the short distance to the ancient links. After a few cars passed him, a motorist finally stopped and recognized the six-time PGA Tour winner and gave him a ride to Muirfield.
