Tiger likes Hazeltines flexibility

CHASKA, Minn. – All the hype surrounding all of that Hazeltine National real estate prompted a reader to e-mail asking for the actual daily yardage of the longest major championship venue.

For Thursday’s first round the layout played to 7,660 yards, 14 yards shorter than what is listed on the card and drew praise from players.

“The beauty of having a golf course this long is having the ability to move the tees around based on the wind,” first-round leader Tiger Woods said. “It’s a long golf course from the tips. We never ever play from the tips.”

The layout will play slightly shorter on Friday (7,575 yards). Tees at the par-3 fourth (7 yards) and 13th (15 yards) have been pushed back and officials got creative at the par-4 14th, using the forward tee (299 yards compared with 357 yards on Thursday) in an attempt to encourage a bold play.
