SAN FRANCISCO – Tiger Woods played his first six holes in 3 over, The Olympic Club’s two par 5s in 1 over and ended his round with a miss-hit chip that all added up to a third-round 75 and fading chances in fading light at the U.S. Open.

Woods’ round of 75 was his worst third-round card as a professional in 15 U.S. Opens and was the day’s ninth-worst round.

Talk to the hand: Woods dismisses injury speculation

For the day Woods hit 7 of 14 fairways, 11 of 17 greens in regulation but it was his worst putting round in what was already a bad putting week that ultimately cost him. He followed efforts of 29 and 31 putts for Rounds 1 and 2 with a 34-putt effort that featured just one birdie, and headed to the practice green with swing coach Sean Foley as the sun set.

“I struggled on the greens today, quite a bit,” Woods said. “They looked quick, but they putted slow. But they were firmer than they were yesterday. So it was a tough, tough feel for me to adjust to and it was amazing how all day I kept getting a half club.”

Woods will begin the final turn at 4 over, five strokes behind front-runners Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk.
