Tiger trying to 'pull a Phil,' follow win with a major victory

AKRON, Ohio – In a spicy juxtaposition, Tiger Woods is trying to pull a Phil Mickelson this week.

Last month, Mickelson won the Scottish Open, then parlayed that victory into his first Open Championship title one week later. Woods will now attempt to follow his WGC-Bridgestone Invitational win with his 15th career major at the PGA Championship.

Past history says it won’t be easy.

This marks the 18th time that Woods has won in his final start before a major championship. Of the previous 17, he has won just four: 2000 U.S. Open, 2001 Masters, 2006 PGA Championship and 2007 PGA Championship.

Woods had won in his last start before a major three previous times in the past two years, but failed to convert any of those victories into a major win in his next competitive event.
