Tom Watson to Simpson: Enjoy present, focus on future

Eight-time major champion Tom Watson offered advice to Webb Simpson on how to handle his newfound fame after winning the 112th U.S. Open last week at The Olympic Club.

'I actually did email him and talked to him a little bit about what it is when you win a major championship,' Watson said Wednesday on 'Morning Drive.' 'Enjoy the moment, but concentrate on the future is basically what I said. Don't let the pundits get in the way of what you do well, which is prepare for a golf tournament. And proceed at your own pace.'

Watson captured his lone U.S. Open in 1982 at Pebble Beach. He won the British Open later that summer and again in 1983 for his final two major titles.

The 62-year-old imparted on Simpson the importance of time management in the months following his win – a lesson another Watson, reigning Masters champion Bubba, would echo.

'There have been several times in history where someone has won a major championship and then gets so busy they can't see straight,' Tom Watson said. 'That's the danger. You've got to keep it in perspective and learn to say 'no,' because there will be a lot of time-consuming offers coming after winning the U.S. Open.'
