Tomasulo's medical extension running out

RSS

SAN ANTONIO – It’s shaping up to be an important weekend for Peter Tomasulo.

Playing on a medical extension after hip surgery, the 31-year-old has only three starts remaining to earn $474,242 and retain his playing privileges.

After a bogey-free 67 to share the first-round lead at the Valero Texas Open, Tomasulo made only one birdie during a Friday 73 that left him in a tie for 10th, two shots off the lead.

Tomasulo has been in a similar position after two rounds this season, only to crash on the weekend. Most notably, he started 69-68 in Tampa but went 75-75 on the weekend to finish T-51. He doesn’t have a top-40 finish on the PGA Tour since the 2011 Reno-Tahoe Open.

If Tomasulo doesn’t earn enough to keep his PGA Tour card, he still has status on the Web.com circuit, by virtue of his victory last July.

“There have been times that I put pressure on myself to try to get this thing quick,” he said. “But I’m happy where I’m at. Worst-case scenario is not even that bad. Sometimes we put too much stress on ourselves.”
