Toms fires final-round 63 for best finish of year

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – David Toms knew the math well enough. With Tommy Gainey having scorched the Seaside Course to the tune of a 10-under 60 to move to 16 under, Toms needed to birdie his last two holes to tie him.

A 13-footer at the penultimate hole pulled him to within one shot but a momentary lapse in concentration cost him the back end of the one-and-one.

“I hit my worst drive of the week on 18. That’s the way it goes,” said Toms, who closed with a 63 to finish alone in second place for his best showing this season. “You get ahead of yourself, and you forget about trying to make one shot at a time. I was thinking about what kind of putt I was going to have before I ever hit the fairway.”

Toms’ 42-yard chip for birdie at the last stopped short of the hole, and he finished a stroke behind Gainey. Still, for a player fresh off a seven-week hiatus, it was hardly a wasted week. Nor will he spend much time lamenting the loss. The McGladrey is Toms’ final event of 2012.
