Toms' lonely lob wedge

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – David Toms, your clubhouse leader at The Players Championship following cards of 66-68, may not be a sentimental guy, but he does have a soft spot for a certain 5-wood.

“It's in a glass case in my game room. My wife gave it to me in that case for Christmas one year about five years ago,” he said of the Cleveland Golf fairway wood he used to ace Atlanta Athletic Club’s 15th hole in Round 3 on his way to victory at the 2001 PGA Championship.

“Shag Bag,” however, was more interested in the whereabouts of the famed lob wedge that he spun to 12 feet at the 72nd hole in ’01 to edge Phil Mickelson by a stroke.

“I have a big storage building that’s filled with clubs and it’s probably in there,” Toms said sheepishly on Friday at TPC Sawgrass. “I should put that on display.”
