ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – News that Atlanta Athletic Club built a new tee at the par-3 15th hole caused more than a few double takes from longtime observers. Not David Toms, who aced the hole on his way to victory at the 2001 PGA Championship.
“Are you surprised? Rees Jones (redesigned) it,” he asked on Tuesday at Sea Island Resort, site of this week’s McGladrey Classic.
The new tee can stretch the hole to 260 yards and insiders say the PGA of America will use the new teeing ground at least once next year when the PGA Championship returns to the layout.
“I might have to layup now,” Toms sighed.
