Tough ending for Davies

RSS

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Watching Laura Davies potentially end her Solheim Cup career here Sunday with a dreadful halve against Brittany Lang was painful to watch.

In journalism, you’re taught to root for no one and against no one, rather are suppose to cheer for the best story. Well, the best story would’ve been for Davies to win her singles match outright. She struggled in her opening fourball match Friday then sat all of the next three sessions before teeing it up in singles.

Sitting on the bench just doesn’t sit well with Davies – who has played in all 11 of these Cups – so she felt she had something to prove. She was 3 up after 10 holes but came unglued when she lost three of the next four holes, yet still regained the lead and was 2 up with two to play. But she butchered the 17th hole, then hit her second shot in a hazard on the 18th and backed into a halve at a crucial time of the afternoon.

“I was in control of the match all day then just gave it away,” she said.

Still, Davies will forever be a Solheim Cup legend.
