POY ballots going out; will HSBC results matter?

With the final “official” event of 2011 in the books, at least as far as the PGA Tour is concerned, it’s time for the membership to cast their votes for the circuit’s Player of the Year award.

Ballots for POY, and the Rookie of the Year award, will be mailed this week, two weeks later than originally scheduled in order to include results from the WGC-HSBC Champions. But it doesn’t appear the China stop will influence player voting.

Keegan Bradley, one of seven players with multiple victories this year including the PGA Championship, opened with a 65 in Shanghai but faded to finish tied for 16th place. FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas finished 42nd.

None of the other leading candidates for POY – including money list winner Luke Donald and Webb Simpson – played the HSBC event. The deadline to return ballots is Dec. 9.

Bradley is also the leading candidate for the Rookie of the Year award. He has two victories, 12 top-25 finishes and finished 13th in earnings. Masters champion Charl Schwartzel played in 13 fewer events than Bradley, posted 10 top 25s and was 24th in earnings.
