Tour types out-matched

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The competition at this week’s Wells Fargo Championship started early. Monday afternoon a group of PGA Tour players and caddies played a soccer match against a local men’s club team.

The outcome?

“They didn’t play that seriously,” Martin Kaymer said. “To be honest we probably lost.”

The match was played at a local high school and featured Kaymer, defending Quail Hollow champion Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Nathan Green and numerous caddies.

“We struggled in the first half,” Kaymer said. “But I want it reported that I made the first goal so I got the team started.”

McIlroy’s young memory was a little better than Kaymer’s: “We lost 7-4. (Kaymer) didn’t even show up until the second half. Really, I looked up and said, ‘Where did you come from?’”

Monday’s match was a warm-up for next week’s match against a local team in Jacksonville, Fla., for The Players Championship.
