Tseng could lose No. 1 ranking at LPGA Founders

RSS

PHOENIX – Yani Tseng’s more than two-year run at No. 1 hangs in the balance this week at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup.

Tseng has reigned atop the Rolex Women’s World Rankings for 109 consecutive weeks, but her once insurmountable lead has been whittled to where No. 2 Na Yeon Choi and No. 3 Stacy Lewis both have opportunities to overtake Tseng this week at the JW Marriott Wildfire Golf Club.

If Choi wins, she will move to No. 1 if Tseng finishes fourth or worse. If Lewis wins, she will move to No. 1 if Tseng finishes third or worse.

Tseng says she isn’t worrying about it. That might be the biggest difference in her approach this year.

“Last year, I really cared about world No. 1, and the people behind me, and whether they were going to catch me,” said Tseng, who is the defending champ this week. “I looked at media, what fans were saying, and it just drove me crazy.

“This year, I’m going to prepare every week, and prepare to win. If I don’t win, we go on to next week. I think that’s why golf is so much fun. I’m not focused on world No. 1 anymore. I just want to have fun and enjoy this as much as I can and if I lose it, just get it back.”
