UCLA halts rival USC women's win streak at 8

RSS

The USC women’s golf team won’t set any victory records this year.

The Trojans were aiming for their ninth consecutive title this week at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, but lost to crosstown rival UCLA by six shots.

No. 1-ranked USC had finished the 2013 season with three consecutive victories, including the NCAA title, and won their first five starts this season.

Even with the runner-up Tuesday, the Trojans have now won 11 of their past 13 starts, and 12 of the past 15.

In chasing victory No. 9 they were attempting to match the feat set by the 1994-95 Arizona State women’s team, which won 11 events in a row, including the 1994 title and all 10 tournaments in the 1995 season.

USC had three players finish inside the top 11 in NOLA, including sophomore Annie Park, the 2013 NCAA champion.

In winning at English Turn, No. 2-ranked UCLA set the 54-hole scoring record at 21-under 843. It was the Bruins’ third victory of the season. Super freshman Alison Lee, No. 2 in Golfstat’s individual rankings, tied for third at the event, two shots behind Auburn’s Marta Sanz.

Both USC and UCLA will tee it up March 3-4 at the Bruin/Wave Invitational.
