UCLA's Cantlay is Nicklaus Award winner

DUBLIN, Ohio – Patrick Cantlay of UCLA was named the Division I Jack Nicklaus Award recipient on Sunday as the nation’s most outstanding collegiate player.

Cantlay had previously won the Phil Mickelson Award as the nation’s top freshman and was named Pac-10 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. He set the UCLA single-season record for stroke-play average (70.5) and led the team in rounds under par (20), rounds under 70 (17) and top-10 finishes (nine).

“It means a lot,” he said. “It’s everything you ever dreamed of doing your first year in college. It’s been exciting and a lot of fun.”

Other recipients of the Jack Nicklaus Award included Alex Carpenter from Abilene Christian (Division II); Chris Morris from Centre (Division III); Oscar Stark from Oklahoma Christian (NAIA); and Brandt Garon from Meridian Community College (junior college).
