Ugly American leads rookie duo

NEWPORT, Wales – American rookies Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton made some history with their strong Ryder Cup start.

With their 3-and-2 rout of Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington, Watson and Overton became the first American rookies to team to win an opening match since 1979. Lee Elder and Andy Bean were the last to do it.

Overton made six birdies, more than any other player in the opening fourballs. Watson added one birdie. They were 7-under through 16 holes, the lowest score in relation to par on the day.

This was a team that was highly second guessed when American captain Corey Pavin sent them out in the last game of the opening session.

Watson had some fun with his teammate when asked if they wanted to be paired together.

“No, I don’t even like him,' Watson cracked. 'Look at him, he’s ugly. All of us guys are good. I would play with anybody. And his putter was hot this morning, and I love him as a partner.”

Overton has a couple dozen or so friends and family from back in his native Indiana who are here rooting him on.

“I just want to thank all of the fellow Hoosiers who flew over from the U.S. to support us this week,” Overton said.
