Uihlein proves he belongs at Walker Cup

ARDMORE, Pa. – Peter Uihlein did more than prove he belonged on the American Walker Cup team.

He proved unbeatable.

Uihlein faced some criticism after he was named among the last two selections to the American team, but he distinguished himself going 4-0. He was front and center in some of the most important moments of this Walker Cup. He was the player who hit the key putt Saturday, an 18-foot par putt at the final hole that won a foursomes match that was the difference between a 3-1 American lead in the morning or a 2-2 tie.

On Sunday, Uihlein won the point that clinched an outright American victory. He did so defeating Stiggy Hodgson, who proved to be the most formidable player on the Great Britain & Ireland side. Uihlein won their match 2 and 1.

“I have a tremendous amount of confidence in Petey, or he wouldn’t have been out there,” American captain Buddy Marucci Jr. said. “Say what you will, but I felt he belonged out there and that’s why we put him out there.”

Uihlein, a sophomore at Oklahoma State, joined Rickie Fowler as the only players to win all four of their matches this week.

“I just tried to appreciate having captain Marucci have a lot of trust in me to go out and perform,” Uihlein said.
