European Tour players are enjoying an opportunity to impress captain Colin Montgomerie this week at the site of this year’s Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor. Germany’s Marcel Siem, a former World Cup winner, leads at the halfway point after young Chris Wood of England tumbled down the leaderboard Friday after holding the overnight lead. Other players with Ryder Cup potential in prime position entering the weekend include Denmark’s Soren Hansen, Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez and Italy’s Edoardo Molinari.
Luke Donald, who won last week in Madrid after a runner-up finish at the BMW PGA Championship, looked to be showing signs of tiring after a 75 in the opening round in Wales. But the Englishman, who now should be a lock for Monty’s team, bounced back today with a course record-tying 65. And while the captain is keeping a close eye on his hopefuls like Donald, Monty himself is also 2 under entering the weekend, just four shots off the lead.
