NEWPORT, Wales – Don’t tell Jeff Overton and Bubba Watson they’re overmatched as American rookies in the anchor position of the morning fourballs in the start of the Ryder Cup.
They began with fire in their eyes.
With a birdie-birdie start, Overton and Watson put the only American flag on the board when play was halted two hours into the matches.
Overton pumped his right fist with the fury of a heavyweight fighter after rolling in a long putt from off the back of the first green. Watson birdied the second to put the Americans 2 up on Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington through two holes.
American captain Corey Pavin was severely second guessed for putting out the rookies in the morning’s last game. Pavin said he put out players in the best-ball format who could make a lot of birdies. In fact, Watson is sixth on the PGA Tour in birdie average. Overton is ninth in total birdies.
