The U.S. trio of Chris Williams, Justin Thomas and Steven Fox got off to a roaring start Thursday at the USGA World Amateur Team Championship in Turkey.
Williams, a senior at Washington and also the world’s No. 1-ranked amateur, fired an 8-under 64 to lead the individual race after one round at Cornelia Golf Club in Antalya, Turkey. He is two shots ahead of Mexico’s Sebastian Vazquez.
Thomas, a sophomore at Alabama, shot 67 to help stake the Americans to an early four-shot lead over Mexico.
Chattanooga senior Steven Fox, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, shot 71 in Round 1, but did not factor in the team score. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round.
In 2010, France won the team title by four strokes over Denmark and five ahead of U.S.
