U.S. Solheim Cup team taking shape at St. Andrews

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Jennifer Johnson’s quest to make her first U.S. Solheim Cup team was dealt a blow when she missed the cut Friday at the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

The top eight in the U.S. Solheim Cup standings make the team at the conclusion of this weekend’s championship. The top two in the Rolex world rankings who aren’t already qualified on points also automatically make the team.

Johnson holds the second roster spot on the U.S. rankings list, but she’s vulnerable to getting bumped out now. She’s locked in a battle for that last spot with Morgan Pressel, who is just three-hundredths of a point behind Johnson. Pressel is in the hunt at the Women’s British Open, sitting third, two shots off the lead.

Johnson is No. 50 in the Rolex world rankings, Pressel No. 51.

Pressel isn’t the only player with a chance to take that last roster spot in the rankings. Nicole Castrale and Gerina Piller are in position to make a run at it. Castrale is No. 77 in the world rankings, but she is poised to make a big move. She’s tied for fourth at St. Andrews just three shots off the lead. Piller is No. 55 in the world and made the cut. She’s tied for 30th at St. Andrews.

Brittany Lang holds the eighth and last spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup points standings. She also missed the cut Friday but isn’t as vulnerable. The only way Lang is likely to get bumped on points now is if Pressel wins the Women’s British Open. Even if Lang is bumped on points, she can then make the team through the rankings list. She’s No. 44 in the world.

Lang would also be in the hunt for one of two captain’s picks. With an LPGA victory this season, Johnson would also be in consideration for a captain’s pick.

There are just four Americans outside the top eight in the points standings who can still make the team on points. All four of them have to win the Women’s British Open to do so. They’re Lizette Salas, Pressel, Piller and Michelle Wie.
