Blackwolf Run hosting ultimate women's major

KOHLER, Wis. – The best week in women’s golf has arrived with Blackwolf Run home to the U.S. Women’s Open this week.

In the men’s game, there is room to debate which major championship means the most.

You might get a pretty even split asking the world’s best players if they would most like to win the Masters, the U.S. Open or the British Open with the understanding nobody’s going to turn down a PGA Championship title.

Apologies to the Kraft Nabisco, the LPGA Championship and the Women’s British Open, but there is no room for debate in the women’s game.

The U.S. Women’s Open reigns supreme.

It is the oldest ongoing major championship in women’s golf, dating back to 1946. It is nine years older than the LPGA Championship, 30 years older than the Women’s British Open (which has only been a major the last 11 years) and 26 years older than the Kraft Nabisco (which has only been a major since 1983).

The U.S. Women’s Open also features the richest purse in women’s major championship golf, with $3.25 million paid out last year. This year’s purse will be announced later this week. If the purse is bumped to $3.5 million, that will be $1.5 million more than the Kraft Nabisco, $1 million more than the LPGA Championship and $750,000 more than the Women’s British Open.
