USGA names Port captain for 2014 Curtis Cup

The U.S. Golf Association announced Wednesday that Ellen Port will serve as captain of the U.S. Curtis Cup squad for the 2014 matches.

A five-time USGA champion, Port won the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur last year to go along with four previous U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur titles (1995, 1996, 2000 and 2011). Along with Carol Semple Thompson, she is one of only two women to win both championships during their career.

"Ellen is one of the great USGA amateur champions of the modern era," noted Dot Paluck, chairman of the USGA Women's Committee. "We are proud to have her as captain of the 2014 team."

A native of St. Louis, Port will have the added bonus of serving as captain in her hometown, as the 2014 matches will be conducted June 6-8 at St. Louis Country Club.

"It's an honor and privilege to serve the USGA, my future players and the game that I've grown to love as captain of the 2014 USA Curtis Cup team," added Port, who played in the Curtis Cup in both 1994 and 1996. "It's an added bonus to have the venue in my hometown, at a club that is so rich in golf history and tradition."

A biennial competition between female amateur teams from the U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland, the Curtis Cup was first played in 1932. The U.S. currently holds a 27-7-3 overall advantage in the matches, though the team from GB&I won in 2012, rallying during the Sunday singles matches at The Nairn Golf Club in Scotland to secure a narrow 10.5 to 9.5 victory, their first in the event since 1996.
